Hair Removal
The Lynton Excelight is a certified medical device used for a variety of cosmetic and medical purposes that is largely recognised as the MOST clinically effective IPL by many dermatologists and the NHS.
It utilises intense pulsed light (IPL) technology to deliver controlled pulses of light energy to the targeted area of the skin. IPL can be used to reduce or remove unwanted hair on various parts of the body, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and bikini area.
How does it work?
IPL is a great way to get rid of undesirable body hair since it works by directing light energy to pigment cells (melanin) in the hair. Melanin is densely packed in the hair shaft, and when IPL radiation is absorbed by melanin, it heats up and destroys the hair follicle and shaft. Over time, damaged hair sheds off the skin, reducing the amount of hair on that area of skin.
Because only around 20% of hair is in the optimal condition to absorb the light energy sufficient to cause optimal damage, the treatment must be repeated. However, the hair becomes finer with each consecutive treatment as the IPL energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, damaging it and rendering it incapable of producing new hair. Because your hair grows in cycles from different follicles, it takes numerous treatments to disable all of the hair follicles.
During treatment
To protect your eyes from the strong light produced by the system, you must wear goggles throughout treatment. During treatment, you will hear the machine buzz and feel a “hot flick” or light heat sensation. The scent of burnt hair can occur on occasion.
After the treatment
The skin is cooled and a soothing balm is used to calm it down. Treatment works best on skin that has not been exposed to direct sunlight for at least 6 weeks. If your skin is tanned (artificial or natural), treatment will not begin until the tan has been removed or fades naturally. You may shave, but you must not wax or pluck the treatment region in the week before the procedure.
Who is a candidate for treatment?
Skin type 1 to 5 are generally good candidates for treatment.
🤎🖤 Dark hair, such as black or brown, contains more melanin, which is the pigment that absorbs the laser energy. As a result, dark hair usually responds best to laser hair removal. The high concentration of melanin allows the light to effectively target and destroy the hair follicle, reducing hair growth.
💛❤️ On the other hand, light-coloured hair, such as blonde, red, or grey, contains less melanin and may not respond as well to hair removal. The limited pigment makes it more challenging for the light to distinguish between the hair and the surrounding skin therefore more sessions may be required.
How many sessions are required?
Normally a minimum of 6 sessions are required however depending on hair colour/type this can increase.
How often are the sessions recommended?
Facial 4 to 6 week intervals.
Body 6 to 8 week intervals.
Can I wax before treatment?
No you should NOT wax, epilate or thread as the hair shaft needs to be in place. You must stop 4 weeks prior to treatment.
Can I shave before treatment?
Yes the day before is recommended.
